Castle of Good Hope

Castle of Good Hope

Built in the 17th Centaury, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest existing colonial building in South Africa. This pentagonal fortress was built by the Dutch East India Company when they established a refreshment base for ships enroute from Europe to East Asia. The castle is also home to three museums. These include the Military Museum, a ceramic exhibition, and the William Fehr Collection, which houses paintings and decorative arts of early colonial South Africa.
